SUMMER TRIP - July 14-16, 2006

My family and I took advantage of the slow pace of summer and headed to the capitol city of Alabama, Montgomery for a tour of the Civil War/Civil Rights memorials. While there we took in a minor league baseball game as we saw the home town Biscuits take on the Mudcats of Carolina. The Montgomery Biscuits are a double A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, while the Mudcats are a farm team of the Florida Marlins. River Walk stadium was the site, a converted train depot in the historic heart of the capital city. The stadium is simply beautiful with all the amenities of a major league stadium. The Biscuits won 7-1 and kept their first place position in the Southern leagues south division. We saw some of our friends from church there as they were visiting friends and a great time was experienced. Wouldn’t it be great if Dothan, Alabama could get a minor league team? You can tell Montgomery has embraced their team as over 4,000 fans came in for the Friday game.

I must mention that this old country bumpkin got some culture Saturday night at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival as we had tickets to the play “Man of La Moncha”. I thought I was going to be bored to tears but I must say it kept my interest the entire evening. The auditorium is located on the east side of Montgomery and officials have done a superb job. The actors and actresses are top shelf and it is well worth the time and effort to attend. We are already making plans to go again.

Well football season is rapidly approaching so stay logged on to our web site for all the exciting action.

MARIANNA HIGH SCHOOL 2006 FOOTBALL SEASON

The Marianna Bulldogs return some top performers as they ready themselves for the 2006 season, with a 4-6 record last year with wins over arch rival Chipley, Northview, Graceville, and Holmes County. The Bulldogs return their leading rusher in Phillip Sylvester who ran for 1,400 yards and 13 TD’s a year ago. Rekus Groomes also returns in the back field along with QB Brandon Garner. Brit Williams returns to anchor the line of scrimmage along with Eric Booth and Steffin Golden. Andrew Isabella also returns to lend his kicking skills. Isabella was 22-26 on pats last year as well as averaging 40.4 yards per punt and 15 touchbacks on kickoffs. Coach Don Dowling will have to retool his coaching staff as Offensive Coordinator John Donaldson has entered the private work sector and Defensive guru Todd Wertenberger was named Head Coach at Graceville.
