Screentech Wiregrass Baseball Classic - 2008

There was a recent Marianna connection at the Screentech Wiregrass Baseball Classic in Dothan, Alabama. The Troy Trojans have two Marianna natives on this years team including pitcher Josh Storm, third baseman Trevor Tyre and of course head coach Bobby Pierce. The Trojans played host to Penn State, Wake Forest and Kennesaw State and claimed three wins and suffered just one defeat. Sadly enough this was the last such classic due to a recent rule change by the NCAA.

Click on the pictures in the two below posts from this years classic.

Football Comes to a Sudden End - 2007

It always saddens me to see the end of high school football. I seem to go through withdrawal symptoms when the team I cover finally puts up the pads. This season it was more pronounced because not only were the Bulldogs done in by the Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs, but it marked the end of an eleven year relationship with WJNF radio. WJNF sold to an outsider who will not cover local sports. I usually then go to other area team playoff games but that only lasted one additional week as all our local public school teams bit the dust. Not only is high school football done but Troy finished their season with a loss to Florida Atlantic and got left out of the bowl scenario despite an 8-4 record. On a brighter note our coverage of Chipola men and womens basketball begins in January on WJAQ 100.9 FM. At this writing the men are unbeaten and ranked number one in the nation. The women are off to another fast start and have suffered only one loss this season. We are locking forward to another exciting year on the hardwoods for Chipola College. I did get a treat during the season as I got to meet the voice of Alabama football, Eli Gold, who was hawking his latest book in Dothan “Bear’s Boys.” If you have a respect for football back in the day as they say, you might want to purchase a copy.
Click on the scenes below from MHS, Troy, and Eli.

Football (article) for week ending 10-20-07

Football continues as we head into November. Sometimes I wonder where does the season go. If you ask me there's nothing like high school and college football. Whether it's on the tube or in person the sights, smells and color of amateur football is tops in my book.

We still have several high school programs that might just make the post season. Meanwhile, Troy football is currently on a roll and I hope it continues. If it does, look for the Trojans to make their appearance in a bowl game.

Check out the photographs below from high school and college football.

Football, Football and Football - Week ending 9-14-07

We're half way through September and it's time for the 1st Quarter Report Card. Marianna at this writing is off to a 2-0 start with 2 big road wins led by FB BradleyBattles.

Over in the eastern part of the county we continue to cover the Indians of Grand Ridge Middle School and they've had only one slip up so far this season. Marianna Middle School Bullpups have an undefeated slate so far and are led by RB Chris Bowers.

Finally, what a night it was for Pike County Alabama as the Troy Trojans upset the Cowboys of Oklahoma State. The bad weather didn't slow down the Trojans as the offense rolled up 41 points in the victory.

Chipola Athletics

What a sports year it has been for Chipola athletics. Two national champions as the softball team and baseball team claimed crowns in the month of May. Back in March the mens basketball team finished as the National runner-up while the Lady hoopsters finished the campaign fifth in the country.

Congratulations to all the head coaches and their staff. I have been asked recently on a Dothan based radio talk show why Chipola is so successful My response was the community support, fan base, the family atmosphere and that most all of us are Chipola grads (me included 1981). Another big reason is top shelf coaching and great athletes who see Chipola as a great place to get a education and play at the next level. One has only to look at the NCAA and the Major Leagues to see our folks excelling. DSSB has been busy this year as well covering over 100 events. We are getting our batteries recharged this summer as we look forward to the Fall and middle and hight school football. I would like to thank all of our broadcasters for a job well done. That list includes Clint Cox, John Ellerbee, Mike Miller, and Sandy Westmoreland. Check out these few pictures below and look for our upcoming football broadcast schedule.

Bulldogs Tame the Tigers - 9-15-06

The Marianna vs Graceville game had irony, several story lines and revenge that had both communities buzzing. However, in the end Marianna blanked Graceville 34-0 as the Tigers surrendered 6 turnovers in the game. Last years Defensive Coordinator for MHS, Todd Wertenberger, is now the head coach at Graceville. In the Jamboree just about a month ago MHS turned the ball over 3 times as GHS beat MHS 17-6 in just one quarter; but, this night Bulldog quarterback Brandon Gardner threw 2 TD passes and RB Phillip Sylvester ran for nearly 100 yards and 2 more scores in the Bulldog victory. Graceville showed the rust for the 2 open dates and only 1 game played heading into the Bulldog contest as mistakes plagued the defending 1b state runner-ups. Marianna improves to 3-1 with the win.

Marianna Blows Out Taylor County - 9-8-06

In Marianna QB Brandon Gardner threw for over 200 yds and 2 TD's as Marianna beat the Perry Bulldogs 42-14. Marianna got rushing touchdowns from Phillip Sylvester, Rekus Groomes and Brit Williams in the rout. The game was low lighted by 15 turnovers of which Taylor Co. committed 10. Derrian Bell turned one of the TCHS turnovers into a TD in the 4th quarter. Marianna turns it's attention now to Graceville who comes to Bulldog Stadium this Friday. Graceville beat us 17-6 in the Jamboree in just one quarter of play. Turnovers hurt our effort that evening but make no mistake about it Graceville is a State title contender in their classification.

Bulldogs Bury Blue Devils - 8-25-06 - Editorial

Marianna got 172 yds passing and 2 TD's from QB Brandon Gardner and RB Phillip Sylvester added 140 rushing yards and a 85 yd kick off return for a TD as the Bulldogs beat Holmes County 40-20 in Bonifay Friday night. HCHS took a 14-8 lead in the second quarter but Gardner threw a TD pass to WR J. B. Johnson and ran one in himself and the Dogs took the lead for good. HCHS made it close in the 3rd quarter on a TD pass from Justin Miller to Jomar Concepcion but two 4th quarter TD's put it away as Marianna improves to 1-0 on the season. In the 4th quarter a text book drive starting at the Bulldog 12 yard line ending with a 15 yard TD pass from Gardner to WR Eric Booth ended all hopes for the Blue Devils. Marianna will travel to Port St. Joe Friday to take on the defending 2b State Champions.

Fall Jamboree 2006 by Russell Register - 8-17-06

Graceville's All State and 1b Player of the Year JJ Laster picked up right where he left off Thursday night with a 3 TD performance in helping Graceville defeat both Sneads (14-0) and Marianna (17-6). Graceville's QB Lee Stevenson and WR Montrez Bullock also were impressive. Marianna unveiled it's wide open passing attack but 4 turnovers hampered its effectiveness. Sneads played better in the third quarter holding the Bulldogs to a 0-0 tie. Football is back and I am tickled. Join us this year for Grand Ridge Middle School football and Marianna football on WJNF on Tuesdays and Fridays respectively. Summer Trip photographs - Biscuits Baseball Game

SUMMER TRIP - July 14-16, 2006

My family and I took advantage of the slow pace of summer and headed to the capitol city of Alabama, Montgomery for a tour of the Civil War/Civil Rights memorials. While there we took in a minor league baseball game as we saw the home town Biscuits take on the Mudcats of Carolina. The Montgomery Biscuits are a double A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, while the Mudcats are a farm team of the Florida Marlins. River Walk stadium was the site, a converted train depot in the historic heart of the capital city. The stadium is simply beautiful with all the amenities of a major league stadium. The Biscuits won 7-1 and kept their first place position in the Southern leagues south division. We saw some of our friends from church there as they were visiting friends and a great time was experienced. Wouldn’t it be great if Dothan, Alabama could get a minor league team? You can tell Montgomery has embraced their team as over 4,000 fans came in for the Friday game.

I must mention that this old country bumpkin got some culture Saturday night at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival as we had tickets to the play “Man of La Moncha”. I thought I was going to be bored to tears but I must say it kept my interest the entire evening. The auditorium is located on the east side of Montgomery and officials have done a superb job. The actors and actresses are top shelf and it is well worth the time and effort to attend. We are already making plans to go again.

Well football season is rapidly approaching so stay logged on to our web site for all the exciting action.

MARIANNA HIGH SCHOOL 2006 FOOTBALL SEASON

The Marianna Bulldogs return some top performers as they ready themselves for the 2006 season, with a 4-6 record last year with wins over arch rival Chipley, Northview, Graceville, and Holmes County. The Bulldogs return their leading rusher in Phillip Sylvester who ran for 1,400 yards and 13 TD’s a year ago. Rekus Groomes also returns in the back field along with QB Brandon Garner. Brit Williams returns to anchor the line of scrimmage along with Eric Booth and Steffin Golden. Andrew Isabella also returns to lend his kicking skills. Isabella was 22-26 on pats last year as well as averaging 40.4 yards per punt and 15 touchbacks on kickoffs. Coach Don Dowling will have to retool his coaching staff as Offensive Coordinator John Donaldson has entered the private work sector and Defensive guru Todd Wertenberger was named Head Coach at Graceville.
