Football Comes to a Sudden End - 2007
It always saddens me to see the end of high school football. I seem to go through withdrawal symptoms when the team I cover finally puts up the pads. This season it was more pronounced because not only were the Bulldogs done in by the Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs, but it marked the end of an eleven year relationship with WJNF radio. WJNF sold to an outsider who will not cover local sports. I usually then go to other area team playoff games but that only lasted one additional week as all our local public school teams bit the dust. Not only is high school football done but Troy finished their season with a loss to Florida Atlantic and got left out of the bowl scenario despite an 8-4 record. On a brighter note our coverage of Chipola men and womens basketball begins in January on WJAQ 100.9 FM. At this writing the men are unbeaten and ranked number one in the nation. The women are off to another fast start and have suffered only one loss this season. We are locking forward to another exciting year on the hardwoods for Chipola College. I did get a treat during the season as I got to meet the voice of Alabama football, Eli Gold, who was hawking his latest book in Dothan “Bear’s Boys.” If you have a respect for football back in the day as they say, you might want to purchase a copy.
